FAQ

Africa eSIM FAQ

How the Africa eSIM works across 28 countries: coverage, prices, data limits and setup.

What is the best eSIM for travelling around Africa?

If your trip takes in more than one country, one Africa eSIM is simpler than buying a SIM card in every country: one QR code, one plan, and data that keeps working when you cross a border. Our Africa plans start at $14.92 for a 3GB, 30-day plan.

For a typical multi-country trip of two to four weeks, the 10GB, 30-day plan at $36.77 is a good fit. If you stream, work remotely or share a hotspot, the 50GB plan has the lowest cost per gigabyte at $2.92/GB.

Which countries does the Africa eSIM cover?

The Africa eSIM covers 28 countries and territories: Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo - Brazzaville, Congo - Kinshasa, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Réunion, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia.

One plan works in all of them. If a country you're visiting isn't listed, check its own destination page.

How much is a Africa eSIM?

Africa eSIM prices start at $14.92 for a 3GB, 30-day plan and go up to $146.02 for 50GB over 30 days. Bigger plans work out cheaper per gigabyte, down to $2.92/GB. You pay once, upfront: there's no contract, no subscription and nothing billed to your phone account while you're away. Prices are shown in USD.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Africa?

Africa plans include a fixed amount of high-speed data and stop when it's used up, so there are never surprise charges. Heavy users should pick the 50GB plan, the largest we offer, or buy another plan when it runs low.

How long does a Africa eSIM last?

Choose from 30 days. You have 90 days from purchase to start using the eSIM, so you can buy it well before your trip. Install it at home over Wi-Fi, then switch the eSIM line on when you land, so none of your plan is used before you arrive. Staying longer? Simply buy another plan.

How do I install and activate my Africa eSIM?

  • 1Choose a plan and check out. Your QR code arrives by email straight away.
  • 2Before you leave, scan it on your phone: on iPhone go to Settings → Mobile (or Cellular) → Add eSIM; on Android go to Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. Menu names vary by model.
  • 3When you arrive, select the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.

If data doesn't start within a few minutes, restart your phone and check that roaming is on for the eSIM. If it still won't connect, set the APN to “orange” in the eSIM's mobile data settings.

Does the Africa eSIM switch networks when I cross a border?

Yes. Keep data roaming on for the eSIM line and it connects to a partner network in each covered country automatically. Your data and validity are shared across all 28 countries, so there's nothing to reinstall when you move on.

Should I get a Africa eSIM or a single-country eSIM?

If you're spending your whole trip in one country, its own eSIM is often cheaper per gigabyte and sometimes lets you choose the network: see Egypt, South Africa or Morocco. For two or more countries, the Africa plan saves you installing and paying for several eSIMs.

Does the Africa eSIM include a phone number? Can I use WhatsApp and hotspot?

The Africa eSIM is data-only, so it doesn't come with a local phone number or SMS. Anything that runs over data works as normal: WhatsApp, iMessage, FaceTime, Messenger and other calling apps. Hotspot (tethering) is supported, so you can share data with a laptop or a travel companion. Keep your home SIM switched on if you need calls or bank SMS codes, but turn off data roaming on it to avoid your home carrier's charges.

Will an eSIM work on my phone?

Most phones released since 2019 support eSIM, including iPhone XS/XR and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, as well as eSIM-capable iPads and tablets. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check, open Settings and look for “Add eSIM” under Mobile/Cellular on iPhone, or SIM manager on Android.
