Bali runs on your phone. Grab and Gojek rides, villa check-in messages, restaurant bookings and maps between rice terraces all need data, and hotel Wi-Fi only covers you while you're sitting by the pool.
A travel eSIM is the simplest fix: install it at home, switch it on when you land at Ngurah Rai (Denpasar) airport, and you're online before you reach baggage claim.
Why an eSIM beats an airport SIM in Bali
The SIM kiosks in the arrivals hall are convenient, but you'll queue after a long flight, often need your passport for registration, and have to swap out your home SIM. With an eSIM:
- You land connected, so you can message your driver or order a Grab straight away.
- Your home SIM stays in for bank SMS codes and calls.
- The price is fixed upfront, with nothing to negotiate at a kiosk.
Coverage in Bali
Mobile coverage is strong in the busy south and centre of the island: Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu and Ubud all have good 4G, with 5G in parts of the main tourist areas.
It gets patchier as you head out:
- The Nusa islands (Penida, Lembongan, Ceningan): fine in the main villages, weaker around the cliffs and beaches.
- North and east Bali (Amed, Lovina, Mount Batur): usable in towns, with gaps on mountain roads.
- Boat transfers to the Gilis or Nusa Penida: expect dropouts mid-crossing.
Download offline maps of Bali in Google Maps before you go, so navigation keeps working in the gaps.
How much data for a Bali holiday?
- One week, mostly maps, Grab and messaging: 3–5 GB
- One to two weeks with daily Instagram and TikTok: 5–10 GB
- Working remotely from Canggu or Ubud cafés with a laptop hotspot: 20 GB or more
Our Indonesia plans run for 7, 15 or 30 days, from 1 GB up to 50 GB. If you're unsure, pick one size up. Our data guide breaks down what each app uses.
Visiting more than Bali?
- Lombok, the Gilis, Java or Komodo: an Indonesia plan covers the whole country.
- Bali plus Singapore or Malaysia: look at our combined Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia plan, or a Southeast Asia plan covering Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia.
Setting up for Bali
- Choose your plan on the Indonesia eSIM page.
- Install it at home on Wi-Fi and leave the line switched off.
- When you land in Denpasar, turn the eSIM on, select it for mobile data and switch on data roaming for the eSIM line.
- Keep data roaming off on your home SIM.
Bali phone tips
- Grab and Gojek are the go-to apps for rides and food delivery. Set them up and add a payment card before you fly.
- WhatsApp is everywhere. Villas, drivers, surf schools and restaurants mostly communicate by WhatsApp, which works perfectly on a data-only eSIM.
- Protect your phone at the beach and on scooters. A waterproof pouch and a phone mount are worth packing.
- Carry a power bank. Hot days, navigation and photos drain batteries quickly.
